I like to think of myself as “mostly plants + conscious carnivore.” This means when I do eat red meat I make it a priority to source organic, grass-fed, ethically, and humanely raised animal products. Remember, not all “meat” is the same. The quality of the meat that you are consuming can make a huge difference in regards to disease prevention, and overall health. Grass-fed beef has a very different nutritional profile than conventionally raised beef. So different, in fact, that I think it would be a big mis-steak (had to!) to eat conventional beef over grass-fed.

Many studies have shown that the nutrients in beef can vary depending on what the cows eat (makes total sense). Grass-fed beef is higher in omega 3 fatty acids (anti-inflammatory) containing as much as five times the amount of conventionally raised beef, as well as almost twice as much CLA (another good-for-you fatty acid associated with numerous health benefits). Grass-fed beef is also packed with more vitamin A and E than conventional beef.

And bonus — grass-fed cows are more likely to spend more time outdoors roaming around, and less likely to be given antibiotics. Woo hoo! (Or maybe I should say woo moo..?!!!). This is because conventional cows are more likely to get sick, as they are usually raised in crowded and filthy feedlots, and fed corn and grains, which their digestive systems are not designed to process. For this reason, sustainably raised grass-fed beef is also less likely to harbor harmful bacteria, such as E. coli.
