"This makes some of the best hot sandwiches. Delicious, deeply flavored beef with rich aujus for dipping. Put it together in the morning and come home to a great meal! We like it with a green salad and some chips on the side. I'm not sure where this came from- maybe the food network or some magazine. The left-overs(if there are any) freeze well. Thaw, thicken the aujus and add any remaining meat and serve over rice or noodles."

  1. Reviewed 21Oct09: This was so easy and SO GOOD. I used a rump roast instead of a chuck roast, but otherwise made as directed. Without dipping the sandwich in the Au jus it was just ok, but dipped in it was just awesome. Great supper! Excited to have the leftovers tomorrow! Thanks for posting :)Updated 10Mar10:I made these delicious sandwiches again tonight, and sauteed some mushrooms and onions to top theses off with -- EXCELLENT. It took the sandwiches to the next level. (I did lose some of my toppings when I was dipping the sandwich, but I just fished them out with my fork). :)

  2. WONDERFUL! My picky 11 yr old daughter who hates meat loved it! Finally, a meal everyone in the family loves! I made this with 4 lbs sirloin tip roast (on sale). I doubled the soup amounts because my son loves aujus.. I forgot the beef bouillon at the store but found aujus seasoning packet at home so I added that instead. Like other reviewers, I was concerned about the salt level but found it was not salty at all! I cooked it for 9 hours on high because of the doubled aujus and it turned out perfect! Next time I'll follow another reviewers suggestion and have some sauteed onions, mushroom and maybe green peppers to top the sandwiches.<br/>FANTASTIC!

  3. Served with sautéed mushrooms and peppers, and our family's favorite, caramelized onions! Soo good and easy!!

  4. Just for fun, add a sliced onion and some mushroom toward the end of cooking. They won't need a lot of cooking and will dress up the sandwiches. OHHH- while they are HOT, put some swiss (or cheese of choice) cheese slices on the meat. It'll melt and be Gr8!

  5. A variation would to tear apart a cooked pork shoulder roast that was injected w/ BBQ sauce beforehand and make a BBQ French style dip sandwich. Giving people a side bowl of sauce to dip their sandwich in. Toast the opened buns some under the broiler if you don't have a wide slot toaster. Oh of course leave off the slaw..

  1. BBQ injected Roast park shoulder with bone-in while cooking before shredding(bone has lots of flavor too)instead of beef.

  3. Excellent flavor! I used a jar of beef gravy in place of the beef consomme since that is all I had. Overall, it was a bit salty, but still very good.

  4. I made these for a get together we had yesterday. Everyone raved and raved! The recipe is very similar to one I used to make, but lost. If you want to change it up a bit, use a rump roast in place of the chuck and add worcestershire sauce and thyme. Thank you for posting and giving me back a family favorite.

  5. Instead of cooking roast, I used sliced roast beef from deli and have let simmer in au jus for up to an hour, depending on amount of time I had. Family enjoyed this very much and have made it several times. Thanks.
