Slow Cooker Meatloaf - Emily Bites (1)

I’ve been really into using my slow cooker lately, and as the weather gets warmer it’s a great way to get dinner on the table without having to turn your oven on during the hot Summer months. I came across this recipe for Slow Cooker Meatloaf with rave reviews and I love meatloaf so I definitely wanted to give it a try. One of the things my husband is known for cooking is his “Swirly Burgers,” which are burgers where he mixes together more than one type of ground meat (like steak/chicken burgers or beef/turkey/bacon burgers). I decided to try that out in this meatloaf (swirly meatloaf?) with beef and turkey and I thought it was a success! I’ve also never used dry onion soup mix to season meatloaf before but I really liked the flavor it brought. This Slow Cooker Meatloaf was so easy to make and it was really tasty. This easy meatloaf uses ground beef, ground turkey, and onion soup mix for a tasty, flavorful slow cooker meal!

Yield: 6 (2 slice) servings

Ingredients

  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • ¾ cup skim milk
  • 2/3 cup plain bread crumbs
  • 1 oz packet dry onion soup mix
  • ½ teaspoon dried rubbed sage
  • 1 lb raw 95% lean ground beef
  • 1 lb raw 99% lean ground turkey breast
  • 1/3 cup ketchup

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the eggs, milk, bread crumbs, onion soup mix and sage and stir or whisk together until well combined. Add the ground beef and ground turkey and mix together (I recommend using your hands) until thoroughly combined. Transfer the meat mixture to a cutting board or other clean, dry surface and form into a loaf that will fit in your slow cooker without touching the sides. If you prefer, you can place a long, wide strip of aluminum foil into your slow cooker at this point before adding the meatloaf to help you lift it out at the end (I just used two spatulas to lift mine out).

  • Add your meatloaf to the slow cooker and cover. Cook on low for 6 hours or high for 3 hours until fully cooked. Remove the cooked meatloaf to a cutting board or serving platter. Spread the ketchup over the top of the meatloaf and slice into 12 even slices.

I add diced mushrooms to recipes using ground turkey or low fat beef to add moisture. Sounds like it might be a nice addition to this delicious recipe.

Yum! My husband hates mushrooms so I can never do things like this at home if I want him to eat it, but I think that sounds great!

I didn’t notice the sodium content amount as the dry onion soup packets are wonderful to flavor meats but usually very high in sodium. Would be curious what the sodium amount is for a serving as some of us have to watch the sodium. Thanks for great recipes and I enjoy your blog.

Hi jean, I don’t usually post sodium since so many of my recipes have instructions like “salt and pepper to taste” but I checked in MFP and it looks like each serving has 750 mg sodium. I do have some other meatloaf recipes on my blog that don’t use onion soup mix, so maybe one of those would be a better fit? Thanks for the kind words! 🙂

I made this for dinner last night and wanted to be sure to tell you how easy and tasty it was. I will definitely make it again. I am going to try this recipe in 12 muffins baked in the oven for about 40 minutes.

I made this over the weekend and it was great! My loaf kinda fell apart a little, but I think I just didn’t shape it well enough before putting it in. No matter, b/c it tasted great and came together really easy. Thanks Emily!

I made this yesterday. It smelled so good. I pulled it out of the crock pot and my 6 year old said it looked disgusting. I made him try it and he ate two huge slices and said he can’t wait for leftovers tonight. It is delicious. I’m going to eat leftovers as a sandwich and put some strong Irish mustard on it. Cannot wait! This one is a keeper and so easy to make!

I just made this for dinner. It tastes amazing and made a huge amount. Only took me about 10 minutes this morning to get it ready and in the slow cooker. Ketchup on top makes it!

I can’t wait to try this however, if you use quaker oats oatmeal plain it’s a better binding agent for meatloaf and you will save 2 smart points on your recipe. Just a thought.

This was great Emily! I have a question though. Each serving of 2 slices is 8 smart points total or 8 points per slice?

Instead of onion soup mix just use dehydrated onion to keep the sodium down.

I made this yesterday and I don’t usually write comments on-line but I had to say how delicious this was. Had no skim milk so I used 1/2 and 1/2 and it didn’t see to affect the taste at all, however; next time I will use all the correct ingredients but I don’t see how it will make it better as it soooo good. Thank you Emily.

I do not eat red meat or pork. Do you think ground chicken would work instead of the beef?

Any idea if this could be cooked in the oven instead, and if so, for how long?

I made this for tonight’s dinner. It was so good. I was worried that it would be dry but the meatloaf had a good consistency and a yummy, yummy flavor. I’ll definitely make it again.

This was just delicious and one of the easiest/quickest preps ever!!! I won’t use a slow cooker liner next time as it stuck a bit, but the foil sling worked great. I can’t get ground turkey here but subbed ground chicken breast. And I found I preferred plain ketchup topping to the usual blends with brown sugar, mustard, ketchup, etc. The house smelled awesome as it cooked. 3 hours on high. Thx for another winner, Emily!

Is it possible to make gluten free? Anyone tried it?

    • Slow Cooker Meatloaf - Emily Bites (37)

I make it gluten free all the time. I use GF dry onion soup mix…usually the store brands are GF or you can use Google and find recipes to make your own. They make GF bread crumbs, but we do not care for them, so I just crush up some GF crackers that we have around that are getting stale!

I was skeptical. My husband hates ground turkey and was even more skeptical. We were wrong. This was amazing. He wants it in the rotation. I used a slow cooker bag which made clean up a breeze too.Slow Cooker Meatloaf - Emily Bites (39)
